Naima Karim

Naima Karim is a visual artist born and raised in Bangladesh, now based in the Netherlands. She moved there after a bachelor's degree in fine arts from the University of Dhaka. As a painter she works mainly in acrylic and oil, and depending on the subject her work is impressionistic, abstract or minimalist. The sky is her recurring subject, though the social and natural pressures on everyday life feed in too. She was completely paralysed in 1999, and that experience shapes her practice. In 2022 she made a multisensory VR experience on climate change that was nominated for awards and screened at festivals including the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam. A second VR work, on depression and anxiety among teenagers, premiered at the 82nd Venice Biennale and continues to tour festivals. She has served as a VR jury member at the Red Sea Film Festival (2023) and the Sehsuchte International Student Film Festival (2024). Her paintings have shown at the 19th Asian Art Biennale and the 8th Beijing Biennale, and are held in collections including Dafen Museum and the Shangri-La Hotel in Jeddah.
